The New York Rangers have made final cuts to the roster heading into the regular season. For now it seems as if Anthony DeAngelo, Filip Chytil and Paul Carey will make the team for opening night. Among the surprising cuts are Vinni Lettieri and Neal Pionk who had good showings in the preseason and will likely be looked at over the course of the season if they can maintain their play in Hartford.

Less of a surprise was that Lias Andersson was returned to Frolunda for the season. While he looked physically capable of handling himself in the NHL, his decision-making in the offensive zone was lacking. This made him slow to react to the developing play and at times made him look tentative. He faired better defensively, however with Rangers GM Jeff Gorton saying that neither Andersson nor Chytil would be kept if they would be placed in a fourth line role, the writing seemed to be on the wall for the Swede who was taken 7th in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft as part of the return that sent Stepan and Raanta to the Arizona Coyotes.

Chytil was far and away the biggest standout in camp and his play likely made the cut of Andersson an easier decision. He was the winner of the Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award as the top rookie as selected by the media.

His play with and without the puck in the offensive zone was a revelation to those who questioned his selection by the Rangers in the first round. At just 18-years-old, he will likely find himself with a short leash from Rangers’ Head Coach Alain Vigneault. The move to keep Chytil makes even more sense when you consider that he can play up to nine NHL games and still be demoted without burning the first year of his entry-level contract.

Here then, is your final New York Rangers roster:
