They reportedly had to pay more than what his former club, the Detroit Red Wings, were prepared to offer him, but it appears that Brendan Smith and the New York Rangers are set to announce a formal four-year extension according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie:

Two days ago, Larry Brooks reported that the Rangers and Smith’s agent, Anton Thun, were “trying to get this done”, and it appears they finally have.

Smith was widely considered to be the second-best defenseman available in a weak free agent market this summer, and his re-signing is the most recent step in helping to bring to light what Gorton’s “on the fly” rebuilt Rangers stand to look like next season.

I don't mind. At least we have a couple guys with a pair of testicles for once. I'd love it if we became a team of assholes rather than a team of "nice guy" award winners.
    Amen!

I mean Ruff was a head coach for 19 years, 1493 games, 736 wins. I would think part of him signing here involved a conversation with Gorton and AV about what his roll would be and how much control he'd have. Additionally, you'd think AV would be a lot more inclined to let Ruff run the D on his own (if that is his roll) than he was with Bueke since Bueke did not have much coaching experience.

    We can only hope.

Considering Holden was top pair last year for WAY too long, I'd assume that if the season started today, he'd be Mac's partner.
Unfortunately for the Rangers, AV will continue to go to the well of shit until the players are literally taken away from him. Holden needs to go, or else he WILL be playing too many minutes for this team.

    If season started today...
    McD - Skjei
    Smith - DeAngelo
    Staal - Pionk/Bereglazov
    Holden

With AV behind the bench, it'll be something more like
    McD - Smith/Staal
    Skjei - Smith/Staal/Holden
    Holden - Pionk/Bereglazov

I think, if the season started today, he's your third-pair RD.
Having said that, I have no freaking idea who Mac's partner would be right now, so I don't expect the defense to look the same come October.

Is DeAngelo expected to make the roster? Don't know much about the kid at all.

Kind of. The FO have spoken glowingly about his abilities, which suggests they have him penciled in, but I've seen him projected everywhere from 4D to 6D to 7D from various sources, informed bloggers, etc.
I think Camp will really carve out the answer to that question. The Rangers appear to have a number of possible depth solutions competing for what I expect to be one regular slot.

    DeAngelo + Smith
    That's one mean/penalty-prone D corps

Agreed. I hope he's ready for bigger minutes. I don't think he's ever played more minutes than he did when he came here.

The concern with Smith getting more minutes is I think the same as it was with Klein.
Another two minutes means it's two minutes against better players. And playing the physical style that they do can be really taxing. So it's not just the extra 2 minutes of skating, it's the increased toll and physicality that comes with it that's concerning.
I'm happy with this deal. It's a little less than I was thinking they would re-sign him at, I was thinking $4.5. I liked his play and he played very well with Skjei. The limited NTC is better than a full NTC, so I will take it.
    Cash or Czech?
You are correct. He averaged between 17 to 19 minutes in Detroit. His average with us is 20:10.

3 minutes is 3 minutes. People constantly said Klein could never play top pair minutes because he only averaged 19- 20 with the Preds. Trying to go along with what people have said here in the past. If you weren't being sarcastic, I apologise.
