The New York Rangers announced late this afternoon that the team has acquired 24-year old defenseman Ryan Sproul from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for 24-year old Matt Puempel.

Sproul is touted as an excellent offensive defenseman with good size and a physical edge to his game. With just 28 games played at the NHL level, he’s yet to prove he is a consistent big league player, but his AHL totals are solid, scoring 91 points in 215 games since being drafted by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Puempel, a former first-round draft pick of the Ottawa Senators, originally came to the Rangers via a waivers claim in November of 2016. In his short time with the Blueshirts, he registered six goals and three assists for nine points in 27 games.
